Bulletin #1

The International Seminar "Quarks-2000" is organized by the Nuclear Physics Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute for Nuclear Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Georgian Academy of Sciences in collaboration with Department of Theoretical Physics of V. A. Fock, St.-Petersburg State University and St.-Petersburg Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Seminar will be held from May 13 to May 21, 2000. "Quarks-2000" is the eleventh in the series of seminars taking place every two years since 1980; the previous one, "Quarks-98", was held in the town of Suzdal. The place of the coming Seminar is the town of Pushkin, also known as Tzarskoe Selo (Tzar's Town). Pushkin is a small town nearby St.-Petersburg. The place is famous for the Tzarskoe Selo State Museum Reserve. It is a brilliant example of architecture and park and garden design of 18th-19th centuries.

The program of "Quarks-2000" includes plenary sessions, parallel sections and informal discussions on various problems, including such aspects of particle physics and quantum field theory as QCD (both perturbative and non-perturbative), Grand Unified Theories and physics beyond the Standard Model, supersymmetric gauge theories, physics under extremal conditions. Other subjects are astrophysics and cosmology as related to particle physics and selected experimental results.

Generally, we will be unable to take care of travel and local expenses of the participants, though we will apply for funds and hope to cover local expenses of a very limited number of people. The cost of local expenses (lodging at Pushkin + meals there + transportation St.-Petersburg - Pushkin - St.-Petersburg + three nights in St.-Petersburg) is presently estimated as about 450 US dollars + 70$ registration fee per participant. Organizing Committee will take care of hotel booking in St.-Petersburg and Pushkin and transportation St.-Petersburg - Pushkin - St.-Petersburg.
